Volunteers Conserve Wildlife Habitat at Voyageurs National Park:

Each year, Voyageurs National Park Association recruits volunteers for a weekend-long blitz of conservation and maintenance efforts in the Park. In 2009, we helped the Park restore critical shoreline habitat onNamakan Lake. Together with nearly 20 volunteers, we planted more than 1,000 native trees and wildflowers. Student volunteers from the University of Minnesota Crookston Wildlife Society collected several bags of seeds (totaling 12 plant varieties) for propagation, which will be planted next season.

Minnesota’s National Park Legacy: Voyageurs National Park Association collaborated with the seven National Park Service sites and programs in Minnesota and their respective partner organizations to develop an educational film about the importance of enjoying and conserving Minnesota’s National Park heritage. Minnesota’s National Park Legacy is produced in partnership with Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), and premiered on October 4 after the Ken Burns documentary series, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, providing a regional context to the larger National Park System. More than 12,000 households viewed Minnesota’s National Park Legacy on its premiere. VNPA produced 3,000 copies of the film, with a companion educator’s resource guide, which we are distributing to libraries and schools throughout Minnesota. We hope that this new educational resource will help to inform young people and community members about the National Park Service sites right outside their front door, and encourage stewardship of these special places.
