Quality Bicycle Products 6400 W. 105th Street Bloomington, MN 55438 (map)

About the Program: In 2008, renewable energy sources represented more than 50 percent of total added power capacity in both the United States and Europe (Renewables Global Status Report: 2009 Update). MEI’s second session of the 2010 Business and Environment Series will provide attendees with an overview of renewable energy options and a roadmap and decision-making tools to enable scaled application of various renewable energy technologies. A panel of business leaders will also share case studies describing their own experiences implementing renewables. In addition, each attendee will have the opportunity to develop strategies for possible application in their company. Registration: $45 for MEI members; $75 for non-members. The Homegrown Experience
Aug 21, 2010 at 6:00 pm (add this)
Nicollet Island Pavilion, Minneapolis (map) (map)

The Homegrown Experience is a new event organized by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB). Aligning with the MPRB Mission & Vision Statements, this event will focus on sustainability, connecting people to the land and providing healthy and enjoyable experiences. The event will feature chef demonstrations, local restaurants, farmers, CSAs, co-ops, food producers, local vintners and brewers. In addition, an outdoor Farmers Market will be featured. Participants will be able to sip, sample, purchase and, most importantly, learn about local, sustainable and organic foods. We are proud to offer a unique component to the event in the form of education. Through an educational stage as well as the ability to talk one-on-one with local food producers and chefs, people will gain greater understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from, and how to enjoy it the Homegrown way. Vendors Wanted! We are seeking vendors who fit the criteria of producing, sourcing and purchasing local and sustainable foods and beverages and those who advocate for and work with these types of businesses. Vendors receive a booth space and a listing in the program, to be handed out to all attendees. The Homegrown Experience is a perfect and unique chance to talk with people who are interested in learning more about local food and where they can get it. Educate them on your processes, help the local food movement grow stronger, and gain new customers. Talk with us! If you have questions, comments, ideas or interest, please contact Heather Ocel at hocel@Minneapolisparks.org or 612-230-6415. We look forward to talking with you soon.

Le Sueur County, near St. Peter (map)

For information about Ottawa Bluffs workdays, contact the volunteer coordinator at (952) 200-6392. Stewardship workdays are physically demanding. We work hard, but we also take breaks and enjoy the scenery. Frequently, tours of the preserves highlighting points of natural and historical interest are conducted. On stewardship workdays we meet at the preserve itself. Car pools must be arranged independently. Important Work Party Details: * Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, eye protection, sun protection, work gloves, a hat and sturdy boots. * Bring a lunch, plenty of water to drink, tools such as loppers, axes, shovels and saws, if you have them. If you don't have tools, please come anyway; The Nature Conservancy will provide tools. * The use of fire and power tools makes some of the work we do more appropriate for adults, but families are always welcome at seed collections and distributions. Volunteer event calendar Please Note: * Participants under the age of 18 should be accompanied by a parent. * Be aware that deer ticks are present on our preserves and use extra precautions (deet repellent to repel deer ticks), and check yourself thoroughly after eash preserve work party. Deer ticks may carry Lyme Disease. If you would like more information about Lyme Disease and deer ticks, please call (612) 331-0700. * If you have certain allergies or medical conditions that you feel may impact your abilities or others, please inform the work party leader. * As a volunteer with The Nature Conservancy, accident coverage insurance is provided while performing scheduled volunteer duties, including travel directly to and from the activity. * Please help us identify situations that represent unhealthy work environments by notifying a staff member of The Nature Conservancy.

Oak Savanna Interpretive Tour
Sep 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm (add this)
Near 36th and West River Parkway, Minneapolis (map)

Carolyn Carr, an ecologist with Ecological Strategies, will lead an interpretive tour of the special Oak Savanna in the Mississippi River Gorge. Carolyn has years of experience conducting educational and outreach programs to protect open space and restore natural areas, particularly in urban areas, and has been an integral part of the work in this section of the River Gorge. Gorge Stewards volunteers have embraced and played a key role in the health of this community gem. This area harbors the highest quality plant communities remaining in the River Gorge, including a mesic prairie and a remnant oak brushland/woodland undergoing restoration to oak savanna. Through Oak Savanna Workdays and other River Gorge events, volunteers remove invasive species, pick up litter, collect seeds, plant native species, and more. Thanks to their countless hours, not to mention the collaboration of many partner organizations, the area that was once a buckthorn thicket now has renewed life. Read more about the history of this oak savanna at this oak savanna workday listing. Ready to register? Please note that while this tour is free, pre-registration is required as capacity is limited, and early sign-up highly encouraged. This page will be updated and note when the event fills. Please note there is another Oak Savanna tour offered as well this day. To register go to: http://ostour.eventbrite.com/?ref=ebtn

Seed Collection at the Sand Coulee/Rare Prairie
Oct 2, 2010 at 8:00 am (add this)
Sand Coulee Scientific and Natural Area, near Hastings (map)

Enjoy a hands-on seed identification and collection training while enjoying a rare example of a sand gravel prairie. Seed will be used for further habitat restoration. Large quantities — of volunteers and seed alike — needed! Previous seed collection is not required — all abilities and groups are welcome. This activity, though, is very detail oriented and best suited for teenagers and up. About the Coulee Home to 13 rare plant and animal species, FMR helped this Hastings-area gem earn SNA or Scientific and Natural Area status from the Department of Natural Resources — affording it the highest level of protection in the state. The site is home to pussytoes, prairie smoke, blue-eyed grass, Carolina puccoon, and toadflax to name just a few native plant species, and is renown for its bird population, including larksparrow, loggerhead shrike, and many other species who depend upon such rare patches of native habitat. To learn more about the Sand Coulee, please visit our Sand Coulee profile feature and our Sand Coulee project page. This event is also part of the Vermillion Stewards program, which involves volunteers in hands-on stewardship and educational programs throughout the unique Vermillion River watershed. Ready to register? To ensure a high-quality experience, capacity is limited and pre-registration required. To sign up, contact FMR Program Assistant Meghan Dudle at mdudle[at]fmr.org or by selecting "Meghan Dudle" in thedropdown menu under "Category" in our contact form. She can also be reached at 651-222-2193 x23. Please include: the name of the event, your name, address and phone number and the number in your party.
