10,000 Reasons Why Photography Contest

Online entries can be uploaded starting April 22, 2007. Deadline for submitting entries is 11:59 pm Central Time June 21, 2007. Winners will be announced at a celebration on August 1st, 2007. Check back for more details..

The Minnesota Environmental Fund “10,000 Reasons Why” Photography competition is open to ALL photographers and will be judged in 2 categories:

  • Adult (amateur or professional) - Photographers at least 18 years of age.
  • Youth - Young photographers ages 13-17.

Prizes: Prizes will be awarded to up to three winning images for the Adult and the Youth divisions.

There are 10,000 different reasons to choose to support the environment—what are yours? The Minnesota Environmental Fund is looking for images that tell us why Minnesota’s environment is important to you.

By submitting your entry, you are agreeing to these terms below and granting the Minnesota Environmental Fund the rights set forth in these terms.

Contest Terms

Images may show natural landscapes, farmland and working lands, wildlife, plant life, weather, people interacting with nature, or an image that reflects your environmental values. Entries of images from outside of Minnesota will be disqualified. Previously published material may be entered; however, please include information on when and where the photo appeared. Images must be accompanied by a statement (less that 30 words) that describes how the image submitted represents the reason you choose to protect Minnesota’s environment. Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. Decisions made by the judges are final.

A total of up to 5 photographs may be submitted per entrant. Entrants must designate the appropriate division in which all their images are to be judged. All images entered must be digitally uploaded.

Camera-made digital images or scans of slides or prints should be uploaded as two (2) megapixels or less at JPEG quality "8". Visit the Minnesota Environmental Fund’s home page to access the entry form and to download images. All winning entries must be available three (3) megapixels or larger.

When we refer to “you”, “your”, “entrant”, or “contestant” in these rules, we mean the photographer who submits the entry form in the adult category, and in the youth category, the photographer and his or her parent or legal guardian.

Any federal, state and local taxes, fees and surcharges on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners.

Photographer/Copyright/Representations
You must be the original photographer of every photograph you submitted. Photographs taken by someone other than you but submitted by you will not be considered and you may be disqualified. You must be the sole owner of the copyright of any image submitted. Your submission of each photograph is your representation and warranty that you are the sole author and sole copyright holder of such photograph, that you have the right to submit the photograph to the competition for the uses described in these rules, that the photographs you submit do not and will not infringe any other person's or entity's rights, that none of the photographs that you submit involve the willful harassment of wildlife or damage to the environment, an d that each photograph accurately reflects the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. You also release, discharge, indemnify and agree to hold harmless Minnesota Environmental Fund, its directors, officers, and employees from all other claims, demands, damages, causes of action, losses, liabilities, injuries or obligations, direct or indirect, known or unknown of any kind, nature or description whatever which you or your heirs, executors, successors or assigns may have or claim to have against Minnesota Environmental Fund, its directors, officers, and employees arising out of participation in or acceptance of any prize in connection with the contest, including any future use of the photographs.

Ownership/Use/Editorial Rights
You retain the copyright to any photographs that you submit in this competition, and all rights thereto, except as follows. By submitting entering the Contest, you grant to the Minnesota Environmental Fund the right to edit, adapt and publish any or all of the descriptions and/or photographs submitted (collectively, the "Entries"). You agree that the Minnesota Environmental Fund may use any or all of your Entries, or portions thereof, in any media in association with the Contest without attribution or compensation to you, your successors or assigns, or any other entity. You grant to the Minnesota Environmental Fund a perpetual right and license to copy, edit, print, publish, display, and otherwise use, in any form or format, whether electronic or otherwise, either singly or in combination with others and in any size, any of the photographs you submit on the Minnesota Environmental Fund website and in other printed and electronic materials that are used to promote the Minnesota Environmental Fund and its work, without any fee or other form of compensation due at any time. . Descriptions or titles, if any, used with the photos are in the Minnesota Environmental Fund's sole discretion. The Minnesota Environmental Fund may disqualify any photograph for any reason in its sole discretion.

All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, adjustments to color and contrast, etc.) will be disqualified.
