Programs
In 2007, MEI launched its Land and Water Policy Integration Project, an effort that seeks policy changes that will encourage sustainable growth in the 11 county metropolitan area. Focus groups in five locations were attended by representatives of watershed boards and planning commissions, staff from cities, counties, and townships, and builders/developers.
In 2007, MEI continued its coordination of Project Green Fleet, a voluntary collaboration of businesses, nonprofits, state and federal agencies that retrofits diesel school buses to reduce their exhaust emissions. To date, Project Green Fleet has retrofitted more than 480 buses statewide – and some 3500 more are planned. These “cleaner” buses are already on the road in the Twin Cities, Duluth, Rochester, and Bemidji. Project Green Fleet has also started providing retrofits to Head Start and transit buses.
