Programs
Friends of the Mississippi River played a key role in the recent process to substantially improve the Vermillion River Watershed Standards, which govern stormwater management, streambank buffers and other water-quality related issues in the watershed. With the help of a dozen local and state partners and hundreds of citizens, our work resulted in the Vermillion Planning Commission’s unanimous decision to dramatically upgrade the recommended draft standards.
FMR’s Heritage Land Registry is an effective program to help both private and public landowners become active stewards and provide the assistance needed for them to protect and improve the ecological functions of their land. Three new landowners enrolled in the Mississippi Heritage Land Registry in 2007, for a current total of 56 registrants and 3,040 acres enrolled.
