MEF BOARD NOMINATIONS

August 1, 2011

The Minnesota Environmental Fund (MEF) Nominating Committee has begun work to develop a full board slate for the current MEF board to consider at the November 2011 Board meeting.

The 2012 board will be operating under MEF’s new structure and there are some key changes that will be implemented, including:

Size: The board of directors will be made up of 11–15 active members.

Composition: The board will require a minimum of 50% plus one (a majority) and not more than 75% of the board members have a direct affiliation with an MEF member organization.

Nominations: A nominations committee will be formed annually by the president and vice-president, with the vice-president serving as chair of the committee. The nominations committee will consist of at least three people, with a majority of them being current board members and at least one non-board member. A single slate of candidates will be presented to all member organizations and board members prior to an annual meeting.

Elections: Individual board members will be elected by the board. Member organizations will no longer designate board members to represent their organization on the MEF board.

Frequency of Board Meetings: The board will meet 6 times a year (every two months) under the new structure.

In this transition year the nominating committee is charged with the special task of developing an entire board slate. As stated in the approved recommendation on board restructuring, we are relying on the engagement of member organizations and campaign partners to develop a pool of potential board candidates. The number of quality candidates MEF can identify will directly impact the committee’s ability to construct a board slate capable of moving MEF forward through the changing landscape of workplace giving.

Please take a few moments, review the qualities and experiences MEF is looking for in board candidates, and fill out and return the MEF Board Nominating and Recommendation lead sheet for people you believe would be strong candidates for the MEF board. You may submit more than one name and share this nomination form with others you believe could help.

We are looking for board candidates from a wide range of sources including current board members, member organizations, MEF workplace campaigns, other workplace giving federations, business and non-profit leaders, and volunteers. You should feel free to nominate yourself.

We are looking for people passionate about MEF’s mission to protect, conserve and restore Minnesota’s environment who possess the following skills and experiences:

  • Board Service
  • Business Development
  • Communications/PR
  • Finance
  • Fundraising
  • Human Resources
  • Legal
  • Marketing
  • Nonprofit
  • Social Media
  • Strategic Planning
  • Technology Planning and Implementation
  • Workplace Giving

Thank you for your time and interest. The development of the new board is one of the final steps in a 2 year process to help MEF become a stronger, more effective organization, capable of delivering vital funds to environmental causes in Minnesota now and in the future.

Sincerely,

Mike McMahon, Chair
MEF Nomination Committee
